Even I had fallen prey to the precision addiction during my X std exams and couldnt get into the college I wanted the most. You said it right that the pressure on the students is unnatural but missed a very crucial point. Why does everyone naturally assume that the assessing system is completely flawed. I agree that we do away with the precise marks and get into GPA style assessment, but one thing that cant be forgiven is the poor teaching quality. The teachers are technically qualified, but as per my observation, neither emotionally nor epistemologically. I had been thru the curriculum (for lack of more interesting activities) of the B.Ed course. It has things like child psychology and philosophy of education in its foundation courses. But like any other course, this evaporates faster than actual motive of teaching. I am aware of people's inclination to teach, but years into the same job makes even the teachers feel the monotony.

I had a word with one of my former school teachers, who had retired a long back jus after I graduated from school. She confessed to the most audacious fallacy in the education system (she was an excellent teacher, I still remember her "french revolution" class :) ). She said that teachers, most of them are lethargic enough to ignore the guidelines that school boards provide to them about how they should teach. It comes along with every revision in the syllabus and the teachers are supposed to adapt to it. But apparently no one does.

I was under the ever so lethargic MSBTE, and had to unlearn my whole studying process when I realised that it was doing me no good in terms of actually applying what I had studied (phew, better late than never).

The grading or assessing, according to me, is the least of our concerns, the stigma of failing fades away but the irreparable damage already done in the classrooms for about those 12 years from Jr KG to X std is a crime.

This is probably, most probably true of what you s...

This is probably, most probably true of what you said about the MBA bhoot. I am part of a crappy course (according to your post, not in the brightest of the places but still a simmering light).
But there is also another behavioral side to what you said and I dont know if anyone else has realized it. The recruiters are of the opinion that hiring an MBA "will" (it should be, "might") make a difference. Atleast they think they have hired someone who can get some work done here, even if it takes a year worth of training. Seldom MBA's from good or above average colleges break this tradition by performing poorly.

But the beauty of this situation is, if you are equally skilled but lack an MBA badge, you will probably need more time to be taken seriously at your job than otherwise. Your decisions will be questioned, re-questioned and platonified until even you will feel as if you are making a mistake. The accountability and (assumed) credibility that an MBA gives you, helps things flow smoothly. But this works only if you are inherently unbiased about the work situation or even potentially aware of your own biases.

So, people like me, who dont have a plausible work experience to lean on, but still in an MBA course, have a really good chance to learn what I want to learn, read as much as possible to be aware of what biases I "might" face during my work and try to consciously avoid them when I actually go live on the job and also have (in some cases) a few things to actually unlearn. You just read a lot to find out what to stay away from.

Like Taleb, all of us need to be skeptical empiricists in whichever field we are, because an MBA wont teach us that.

Apart from this, you have a really nice blog here, I was a lil disappointed to find the FinGyaan blog empty. It is really a neat idea.

cheers

PS: loved the lens work, lohgad rocks.

Hi Dude,
Congratulations!! yes I often think of...

Hi Dude,
Congratulations!! yes I often think of it how it will feel. If that had been the case there would have been no crime in the US or other developed countries since the credibility (perceived or otherwise) of law enforcement agencies in these countries is very high. The core reason for people engaging in unlawful behaviour is not their "chalta hai" attitude but structural factors that sometimes leave them with little alternative. Take the case of housing - The main reason why someone would agree to buy a house inspite of knowing that the construction is illegal is not because he is confident that he will be able to get away with it, but because the impediments to buying a legal house (in terms of money, location etc )are high enough for him to take this risk. The key to solving this is not to effect ordinances that affect people who merely out of compulsions built/bought illegal houses right under the noses of authorities (who were ,I am sure handsomely compensated for their inaction). The key to solving this is to provide the people with suitable housing and infrastructure so that the incentive for engaging in the illegal act becomes less optimal in relation to the cost. This sort of action represents a vicious circle where the authorities dont provide people with quality housing, take bribes for overlooking illegal houses and then when things get hot, demolish the very houses, they were paid bribes for. Another point substantiating this analysis could be the fact that this problem is most widespread in cities with high housing costs and inadequate supply to support the demand. Your logic behind not buying the ticket was the long queue and not your chalta hai attitude. Just like given a short queue or no queue you would buy the ticket, given adequate and reasonable legal housing, people will not resort to breaking the law. Demolishing houses is like taking a painkiller and not treating the cause of the pain.

Sunil

Ashutosh,interesting comment. However...

Thats a very interesting thought Ashutosh. However we need to be aware that though the title of greatness cannot be heaped upon someone purely on a numeric basis (the number of titles etc), the number of victories/Championships is indicative of the fact that the concerned person was the best amongst all his peers. Its patently unfair to compare Schumacher with Agassi since both of them represent different sports with different variables. The only thing that can be convincingly commented upon is that while Schumacher was the greatest of his era , Agassi was not. Extrapolating hypothetical scenarios like the presence of former greats etc doesnot under any circumstances take away credit from a sportsperson for being the best in class. Though I fully agree that randomness has an unfairly high role to play in anybody's life, discrediting a sports person hardwork and attributing his success purely to luck is harsh. Its like saying things would have been different for us had you been in our batch or had Ashok Das been in yours. Speculative and Fruitless.

Sunil.

Very accurate assessment. nature.

our objective (proclaimed) is to
bring the socially disadvantaged sections of our society near or at par with others in terms of access to opportunities/ resources..

now it's highly debatable what is "disadvantaged"?
What is "sections"?
what exactly is this "parity" in terms of opportunities/ resources?

Even views of Sociology institutes would differ on this..

further, the lack of proper/ systematic study (or general lack of awareness abt
